Slave Name Roll Project: Releasing the Names of More Slaves from My Ancestors

Recently I participated in the Slave Name Roll Project as found at Tangledrootsandtrees.blogspot.com. Blogger Schalene Dagutis encouraged those of us with ancestors who had owned slaves to publish the names of the slaves we find in documents, wills, correspondence, family Bibles, etc. as a way of assisting fellow African-American researchers to find their own family members.

Following are additional names of slaves I have recently found in wills, as well as names and basic identifying information about their masters. All typographical errors found in the original documents have been left unchanged.

Thomas Pace, born ca 1706 Bertie District, North Carolina; died 1764, Northampton County, Virginia; married Amelia ‘Amy’ MNU; excerpts from his will made in Northampton, North Carolina. Son of Richard Pace and Rebecca Poythress.

“I give and bequeath unto my beloved Wife Amy two negroes Bob and Jack… I give and bequeath unto my daughter Celia one negroe girl named Dinah… I bequeath and devise to my son Nathaniel and his Heirs forever … three negroes Will, London & Sarah. I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Frances two negroes Joe and Rose. I give and bequeath to my son Thomas the Plantation wheron I now live and the Land thereunto belonging & two negroes Essex and Peter.  I give and bequeath to my Daughter Amy one negroe girl named Jane and Fifty Pounds Virginia Money. I give and bequeath and Devise to my son Richard and his Heirs forever my Grist Mill & Plantation on Cedar Creek and all the Land thereunto belonging & also two negroes Pepper & Cesar…”

John Jones, born ca. 1662 in Isle of Wight, Virginia; died 1736, Bertie District, North Carolina; married Martha Carter; excerpts from his will made in Bertie District, 17 March 1735/36.  

“I give and bequeath to my Son James Jones one Negroe fellow called Mingo to him and his heirs forever… I give and bequeath to my Son Fredorick Jones one Negroe fellow called Ned to him and his heirs for Ever and the Negroe Wench Called Rose only the use of the said wench to be for my wife Martha Jones during her widow-hood the two first Children that shall be born of the said Wench after the Date hereof the first I give to my daughter Mary Bonner and the Issue born of her Body: the second to my Daughter Anne Cotten I give and bequeath to her and the heirs of her Body Lawfully begotten for Ever the said Wench and all her Issue after; the two-first Children as before bequeath I give and bequeath to my Son Fredorick Jones & his heirs forever… I give and bequeath to my daughter Prudence Williams one Negro girl called Mary and all her Increase…I give and bequeath to my grandson Abraham Jones one Negro girl called Nan and all her Increses…I give and bequeath to my grandson John Jones one Negro girl called Judith and all her increas to him…”

Rev. Adam Jones, born ca. 1755 in Virginia; died Oct 1830 in Warren, Georgia; married 3x but wife named in will is Nancy Baxley; excerpts from his will made on 14 Oct 1826 in Warren, Georgia.

A Negro child named Charity was left for his wife, Nancy– conditioned on her remaining a widow.

Bridger Jones, born 11 Aug 1753 in Isle of Wight, Virginia; died 07 Sept 1819 in Statesboro, Bulloch, Georgia; married Rachel Barry; excerpts from his will made 01 May 1819 in Bulloch, Georgia. Son of Benjamin Jones and Johannar Perry.

“I give and bequeath unto my beloved Daughter Mary Everett one negro woman named Serene and all her increase… I bequeath unto my beloved daughter Rachel Wise one negro woman named Tab and her increase… I bequeath unto my beloved son Briant Jones one negro boy named Donum another named Sharp… I bequeath unto my beloved Son Josiah Jones one negro boy named Antony one girl named Jinny … I bequeath unto my beloved son Bassel Jones one negro girl named Massey … I bequeath unto my beloved son Buckner Jones one negro girl named Tener … I bequeath unto my beloved Daughter Nancy Jones one negro girl named Darkes Junior one negro boy named Ebis…”

William Wise, born 31 Dec 1755 in Clifton, Accomack, Virginia; died 13 May 1816 in Statesboro, Bulloch, Georgia; married Sarah Margaret Denmark; excerpts from his will dated 13 May 1816, Bulloch Co. Georgia. Son of Col. John Wise IV and Margaret Douglas.

“I give and bequeath to my son Henry Wise, one negro woman named Eady, and one feather bed… I give and bequeath to my daughter Viney Denmark, one negro woman named Sarah, and one feather bed… I give and bequeath to my daughter Susanah Denmark, one negro man named Denmark, and one feather bed… I give and bequeath to my son Preston Wise, one negro man named Guy… I give and bequeath to my daughter Rebecca Jones, one negro woman named Teaner… I give and bequeath to my daughter Zilphia Goodman, one negro man named John… I give and bequeath to my son John Wise, one negro man named Jack… I give and bequeath to my daughter Jincy Denmark, one negro woman named Easter…”
